**Encounter member only event** | Sips & Stained Glass | Monday, May 1, 2017, 6 – 7 PM | Church of the Resurrection | Leawood, KS 

Join the Church of the Resurrection in Leawood as we take a behind the scenes tour of their brand-new stained glass window at this Surprise & Delight Encounter event! A happy hour at a local establishment will follow the tour. This event is free, but registration is required and tickets are limited to the first 20 registrants. Registration will go live at 9am on April 5th, here.

 Folk Songs and Stories | Thursday, May 18, 2017, 5:30-8:30PM | The Writers Place + Folk Alliance International | Midtown Kansas City

The arts are often how we share stories – of our past, our heritage, and our hopes for the future. Join us for the final ArtsKC Encounter of the season, to hear stories told and sung by Kansas Citians. The Writers Place (located in a spacious old house in the Valentine District) will host, and Folk Alliance International will feature some stellar musicians. When they’re not hosting events with us, The Writers Place offers a place to hear local and visiting writers share their work, classes and workshops for a variety of age groups and audiences, art exhibits featuring local artists, and numerous programs with community partners throughout the region.  Folk Alliance International’s mission is to nurture, engage and empower the international folk music community — traditional and contemporary, amateur and professional — through education, advocacy and performance.

PAST EVENT | Summertime Shanties | Saturday, July 9, 5-9PM | Platte County Courthouse Lawn | Platte City
For our kick-off event of the 2016/17 season, we partnered with Platte City Friends of the Arts to attend Summertime Concerts on the Courthouse Lawn! Attendees enjoyed a pre-show reception with food from Bee Creek Café, beer and wine from the Platte City Pool Hall, and a conversation with the band One Night Stand.

PAST EVENT | Opera Unmasked | Friday, August 26, 5-7PM | Beth Ingram Administration Building | Crossroads Arts District
We’re performing a duet with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City to unmask your hometown opera company! Join us for a reception in the Lyric’s Beth Ingram Administration Building where you’ll enjoy heavy appetizers from Deco Street Eats, cocktails, and a short performance featuring the Lyric’s Apprentice singers previewing songs from the Fall 2016 season opener, Hansel and Gretel. Afterward, we’ll get a complete production tour, featuring the set vault, costume shop, rehearsal hall, paint floor, scene shop, and prop storage! Young Friends of the Lyric Members receive 50% off tickets.

PAST EVENT | Art on the Route | Saturday, September 17, 3-6PM | Kansas City Streetcar Authority + Kansas City Artists Coalition | River Market
Take an artful ride on the Kansas City Streetcar! Your Encounter will start with a tour of the Singleton Yard (check out how the streetcars are maintained and kept finely tuned.) Then, we’ll hop on the streetcar (which is free to ride) to view the artworks that were carefully selected to enhance this milestone experience for Streetcar passengers. The Kansas City Artists Coalition will host a reception at the end of the route. Enjoy over 100 pieces of art by artists who have been a part of KCAC’s 40-year history.

PAST EVENT |Sweets and Songs| Friday, November 11, 6-8PM | Allegro Choirs of Kansas City Studios | Bonner Springs
Come see how the Allegro Choirs of Kansas City live up to their mission to “change lives with song.” This organization includes six choirs, composed of area youth ranging from age 8 to 18. We’ll get a tour of their rehearsal and studio space in Bonner Springs, see a rehearsal for their annual Winter Blessings concert, and enjoy snacks and drinks.

PAST EVENT  | Royal Art and Architecture | Saturday, March 18, 2017, 3-6PM | Kauffman Stadium | Kansas City

We’re teaming up with the Word Champion Royals for an art and architectural tour of The K! Join us for a chance to get up-close and personal with the creative minds that helped breathe new life into the building. You’ll also meet mural artist and Artist, Inc. graduate Sike whose mural is featured in the service tunnel in the stadium. Cap off your event with a live performance from Kansas City poet Gustavo Adolfo Aybar, and imbibe in food and drinks in the ever-popular Craft & Draft.

PAST EVENT | Commoners and Kings | June 25: Guided tour of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art featured exhibit A Shared Legacy: Folk Art in America and Heart of America Shakespeare Festival’s production of King Lear. Partnering with Young Friends of Art.

PAST EVENT | Cirque Under the Stars | Thursday, September 10 | Starlight Theatre: For your September Encounter, join us for Cirque Under the Stars! We’ve partnered with Starlight Theatre and Center Stage to bring you a daring evening of circus acts and urban dance at Cirque Eloize iD. Arrive early for a backstage tour, food by PB&J Catering, and specialty cocktails under the Starlight Theatre North Pavilion.

PAST EVENT | Arrowhead Art Collection | Wednesday, November 11 | Arrowhead Stadium: In 1972, American sports pioneer Lamar Hunt built Arrowhead Stadium, an architectural masterpiece that has become a cultural icon. In 2010, as part of a massive renovation of the stadium, the Hunt family and the Kansas City Chiefs installed the Arrowhead Art Collection to celebrate regional art and engage the community. Meet some of the artists whose works were chosen for this collection, and enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails while we tour the full exhibit!

PAST EVENT | The Art of Resiliency | Friday, January 22 | Synergy Services, Inc.: Join Synergy Services, Inc. for a behind-the-scenes look at their Youth Resiliency Center, food, drinks, and a make-and-take art project (all for only $40!) The YRC supports programming for youth and families staying in Synergy’s facilities as well as students who come to the YRC for fun, community, and art after school!  After our tour, enjoy food from Affare Restaurant and drinks from Amigoni Urban Winery, while we hear stories of inspiration from Katie Brewer, one of Synergy’s fabulous teaching artists. Round out your evening with a painting project that you get to take home (we guarantee everyone will leave with something YOU made and  YOU like.)

PAST EVENT | Ceramics and The Whale | Friday, March 11 | Kansas City Art Institute + Unicorn Theatre: Did you know that one of the most prestigious ceramic arts programs in the world is based right here in Kansas City? Join us at the Kansas City Art Institute as we enjoy a private viewing of ceramic works by KCAI artists. Then, join us for the Kansas City premiere of The Whale at Unicorn Theatre. “Savagely funny and deeply touching”, this production will show you beauty in the unexpected (and we’ll get to speak with some of people who made the production possible!)

PAST EVENT | Backstage Brews with the Ballet | Thursday, April 28, 5:00-7:00PM | Kansas City Ballet Bolender Center:
Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at Kansas City Ballet’s preparations for their breathtaking production of Rite of Spring. Then, enjoy libations from Underdog Wine Co.Tom’s Town Distillery and Rock and Run Brewery, delicious food, and conversation with the dancers! This fun event is presented in partnership with BARRE KC, Kansas City Ballet’s membership social group for dance enthusiasts. You will see a rehearsal of one of the four ballets that will be featured in their May production, plus hear more from the dancers and artistic staff in a special post-rehearsal meet-and-greet.
