Local Businesses Supporting Creators:
From ArtsKC Grant Recipient to Halls Kansas City Showcase
Last November, at the ArtsKC Inspiration Breakfast, former KCAI student Whitney Manney spoke to attendees. She had recently been awarded a grant from ArtsKC to help support her burgeoning fashion design business and that morning was addressing the audience of over 500 about how the financial support was helping her business and what it means to be an artist in Kansas City. She really got my attention by telling the crowd that her mother named her Whitney Mariah, and when you are named after divas such as these two, you really must live up to the challenge. She got my attention even more when she described how she designs her own patterns for her fabrics and uses everything from computer technology to painting on cardboard. I was less impressed with the technology and cardboard than with the fact that SHE DESIGNS HER OWN PATTERNS. To a person in the fashion business, that is impressive.
At the end of the event I introduced myself to her. I’ve since been to her studio, she has met our buyers, we have been collaborating and on Friday, May 1st, Halls Kansas City will premiere a Whitney Manney Pop-Up Shop in our store. Our team at Halls has become so impressed with Whitney that we are expanding this concept and will be hosting 10 additional young, local artists that same night by exhibiting installations of their work and mixing them with Halls current fashion.
It is important for local businesses to support our artists/creators/business entrepreneurs, so Halls wants Kansas City to meet Whitney and see what she is capable of doing. She has the talent, Halls has the venue. It’s a great partnership! Come see Whitney and her designs as well as many other young Kansas City artists who have created installations from various types of media.
Make Halls your “First Friday First Stop,” May 1st, 5:00-7:00 p.m., Crown Center, Level 3.
Do you know that you can park at Crown Center and walk The Link entirely indoors to the parking lot behind The Freight House restaurants?
