Chicano Voice | The Chicano Arts Festival
Mattie Rhodes Art Gallery, May 7th 2016, 1pm – 6pm
Free to the public.
What does Chicano mean? Chicano refers to a person who is born in the United States but whose family originated in Mexico. The term became widely used during the Chicano Movement, mainly among Mexican Americans, who wanted to express an identity, of cultural, ethnic and community pride. The first ever Chicano Arts Festival in KC will represent and promote the Chicano art movement by bringing awareness and education as well as highlight Chicano artists who celebrate the meaning and the experience of being Chicano. The VOICE of the Chicano is a voice of struggle, pain, beauty, strength, fight, connecting, family, heart, and history. The Chicano Arts festival welcomes all of us to join the artists’ journeys as they walk us through their worlds, their culture, and their personal path in the struggle for acceptance by American art galleries and museums.
Mattie Rhodes Art Center is an ArtsKC Catalyst Grant Recipient.
