GRANT RECIPIENT

Melissa Wolf

Soft Things

This project would present a new body of medium- to large-scale felted sculptures by Mexican-American artist Melissa Wolf. The project centers on imaginative creatures and animals created through foam carving and needle felting. The sculptures will be exhibited at the consulate of Mexico in Kansas City. During the process of creating the sculptures Wolf would invite the community to help her needle felt the sculptures as a way to collaborate and engage with the community while also being able to teach the process and history of felting and working with fiber. She will offer a public felting demonstration and a hands-on fiber activity introducing visitors to the process of transforming wool into sculptural forms then transitioning into working on the sculptures intended for exhibition as a group. She would host a series of workshops at Open Room Gallery, a space that would accommodate a group of people to work on the project alongside her. The end goal for the project is to have created and completed a series of felted sculptures that was collaboratively worked over the duration of 2 months by the community that can then be exhibited at the Consulate of Mexico in Kansas City in the Month of May, 2027. Wolf in conjunction with the Consulate of Mexico will do outreaching to the local communities as well as advertising.
