NOW SHOWING ARTIST

Chico Sierra

In my work I am creating a story using pre colombian imagery to bind my story to the history of my ancestors and more broadly to make a connection with those of diverse backgrounds. I am driven by the desire to redefine my particular history while discovering new ways to direct the eyes of my audience to change minds and hearts. Since I was a child I was interested in the diversity of cultures from all over the world and the myriad of ways they have come to similar beliefs, the ways they survive and the art they make. More specifically I am interested in the stories of cultures tied to natural processes and how that drives their cultural experience. Having been born into a more urban environment, and a culture and history muddled by time, colonialism and limited resources, I also use elements from contemporary abstraction to weave my current experience into my work. Primarily, I work with acrylic paints, paint markers and mediums ranging from canvas to carved arm chairs, baseball bats and guitars. My mark making is what defines a lot of my work and I work within specific perimeters to create unique work that is recognizable as my own. There are socio-political elements that find their way into my more abstract works, though I have over the last few years been making more overt political posters with text and imagery that has very specific targets. I have woven these elements together with my specific style that also extends into my mural work.
